"It's imperative every possible effort be made to achieve total weed control in all crops in sugarbeet rotations…"
The presence of resistant weeds in the American Crystal Sugar Company growing area makes it absolutely necessary to achieve complete weed control in 2014 and beyond. No weeds can be allowed to go to seed in any Roundup Ready® crop in the rotation. Weeds of greatest immediate concern are Waterhemp, Common and Giant Ragweed, and Kochia. If resistant Kochia, which has been documented in the southern RRV spreads northward, weed control costs in sugarbeet will rise dramatically. It's imperative every possible effort be made to achieve total weed control in all crops in sugarbeet rotations to preserve glyphosate technology for your weed control program in beets.
It is critical we properly use all herbicide FORMULATIONS containing glyphosate. Proper use maximizes weed control and reduces opportunity for resistant weed development.
USE CORRECT RATES. There are about 70 glyphosate formulations labeled for sugarbeet use. There are 7 different amounts of acid equivalent (active ingredient) being marketed. The correct amount of product to use will vary by nearly 50% depending on your product of choice, see Table 1.
Formulation Lbs./Gal | Ounces Needed for Different Rates | ||
---|---|---|---|
Acid Equivalent | .75 Lbs./A | .98 Lbs./A | 1.125 Lbs. |
3.0 | 32 | 41 | 48 |
3.7 | 26 | 33 | 38 |
4.0 | 24 | 31 | 36 |
4.17 | 23 | 30 | 34.5 |
4.5* | 22 | 28 | 32 |
4.7 | 20 | 26 | 30 |
5.0 | 18 | 24.5 | 28 |
* All rates should be equivalent to this accepted standard
If resistant waterhemp is suspected, use layby Dual, Outlook or Warrant. The NDSU weed control guide indicates Warrant is less effective on Waterhemp. If Warrant is used you cannot replant the field to sugarbeets.

Other Features Include:
NDSU Pest Management App
The NDSU Pest Management app combines select information from the Weed Control Guide, Fungicide Guide and Crop Insect Management Guide. Information in the app is grouped by diseases, insects and weeds for each crop (corn, dry bean, potato, small grains, soybean, sugar beet, and sunflower). Pest management options are provided through a user-selection process. Once a management strategy is selected, the user can view rates, mode of action, general information and additional resources. The app is available for free on Google Play and the iTunes App Store, or follow this link: http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/extension/apps
