Sugarbeet Root Maggot Counts

NDSU's Sugarbeet Root Maggot Fly Counts

Important Sugarbeet Root Maggot Information

Here are the latest estimates for peak fly dates at 4 representative locations (based on extended weather forecast):

  • Sabin, MN -- June 1-3
  • Hillsboro, ND -- June 1-3
  • Grand Forks, ND -- June 6-8
  • St. Thomas, ND -- June 8-10

Rainy forecast for Thurs through Monday could delay things somewhat, and those so-affected areas will see a broad (not sharp) peak.

Granulues are ONLY an option for northerly areas (Grand Forks and farther north). Apply granules at least 5 days before predicted peak. Applying them before the potential rains we might receive will work well unless the rain comes heavy (3/4 inch or more, within less than a 1.5-hour span). Incorporation of granules during application is critical.

Liquids are the best option for the more southerly locations -- apply within 2-3 days (before or after) of predicted peak.
