Soil Type (heavy or light soil) may influence order of harvest. You may want to reconsider the harvest order under adverse weather conditions. Keep in mind that soil type can influence deep N concerns along with sugar content.

Scalping of the sugarbeets will improve the quality of your sugarbeets in any situation, by reducing the amount of impurities. Excessive topping, however, equates to a loss of yield that will diminish the quality that was gained by scalping.

Be sure to review the impact of the prepile premium payment system that was modified beginning with the 2010 crop year on your field harvest order.

If an at risk acres policy makes it appear likely beets will be left unharvested in a given year this possibility must be factored in to harvest management decisions.
